In Taoism, the high true deities second only to the Jade Emperor are the "Three Grand Officials," representing heaven, earth, and water in the three realms. They are also known as the "Three Realms Lords" and are great gods closer to the mortal world.
The 15th day of the seventh lunar month is the birthday of "Emperor Qingxu of the Mid-Yuan Second Rank, the Sin-Absolving Earth Official," Emperor Shun. He is in charge of forgiving sins. Legend has it that if one can sincerely repent and reflect on past sins on this day, they can receive absolution and blessings from the Great Earth Official.
