When the Grand Duke Jupiter is in charge, there will be no joy, only disaster. When the Grand Duke Jupiter appears, even without illness, there is a risk of financial loss.
The Grand Duke Jupiter, also known as the Benming Suishen (personal zodiac deity), governs the fortunes and misfortunes of the human world. Each of the sixty Jiazi cycles has its own Suishen (zodiac deity) on duty, and the deity on duty is called the "Zhi Nian Tai Sui" (Deity of the Year). The "Huangji Jingshi" records that the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, consisting of ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches, give rise to the sixty Jiazi cycles, from Jiazi and Yichou to Renshu and Guihai. These are used to determine a person's birth year. The Grand Duke Jupiter is a revered celestial deity in Taoism, referred to simply as "Tai Sui," and is the most powerful deity of the year.
Ancient books say: "Tai Sui is like a ruler, the head of all gods, the master of all calamities, as if ruling the world, not to be offended." The common saying goes: "If Tai Sui sits above you, without blessings, you may face misfortune; if Tai Sui appears, without illness, you may face financial loss." The so-called "offending Tai Sui" generally refers to the Taoist concept, meaning that the annual "Tai Sui Star Lord" rotates to bestow blessings upon those with good karma or to bring misfortune to those who have committed many evils. Because the Tai Sui deity holds a high and powerful position, everyone respects Him greatly, fearing to anger Him and bring harm upon themselves. To avoid offending the Tai Sui deity, during years when one is in conflict with Tai Sui, a "Tai Sui appeasement ceremony for seeking blessings and chanting scriptures" is performed, praying for a peaceful and smooth new year, for misfortunes to turn into blessings, and for calamities and disasters to be averted.
