Hexagram interpretation:
"Song" means to contend or litigate. The upper trigram is the Qian trigram, representing heaven. Heaven is yang and has the effect of rising. The lower trigram is the Kan trigram, representing water. Water is yin and flows downward. Their effects are opposite, and the upper and lower trigrams go against each other. On one hand, the Qian trigram uses strength to control what is below, and the Kan trigram uses peril to resist what is above. In terms of imagery, they also oppose each other, thus implying the meaning of "litigation." Simultaneously, the lower trigram represents the "inner self," and the upper trigram represents the "outward appearance." Now, if we assume the inner self is treacherous and the outward appearance is gentle, disputes are less likely to arise. However, in this trigram, the inner trigram is treacherous, and the outer trigram is strong. This means that having a treacherous inner self combined with a strong outward appearance will inevitably lead to conflict, hence the meaning of "litigation." This is the origin of the name "Song" trigram.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Di Qing (1008-1057), courtesy name Hanchen, was from Xihe, Fen Prefecture (modern Fenyang, Shanxi) during the Northern Song Dynasty. He had tattoos on his face and was skilled in archery and horsemanship. Born into poverty, he was appointed commander of Yanzhou in the first year of Emperor Renzong's Baoyuan reign (1038). Brave and strategic, he fought fiercely in the Song-Xia wars. Each battle, he would charge into enemy lines with his hair unbound, wearing a bronze mask, achieving numerous military successes. He had good relationships with prominent officials in the court such as Yin Zhu, Han Qi, and Fan Zhongyan. Fan Zhongyan taught him "Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals," after which Di Qing began to study earnestly, becoming proficient in military strategy. He was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs due to his merits. Throughout his life, he fought in 25 battles, with the surprise attack on Kunlun Pass on the fifteenth night of the fifth year of the Huangyou reign (1053) being the most famous.

Annotation

A journey of a thousand miles is not to be feared: Di Qing went west to Liao to retrieve the Pearl Banner, undertaking a arduous journey without fear of hardship. A loyal heart will discern right from wrong: With wholehearted devotion and laying down one's life, loyalty and treachery can be distinguished. Never have I done anything to make me frown: Live your life without doing anything that wrongs others, and you will have no one who hates you. Though disasters multiply, find peace within: When facing one disaster after another, you must overcome each one yourself to achieve peace.

Vernacular

Di Qing traveled to Western Liao to retrieve the Blazing Pearl Banner. Despite the arduous journey and no fear of hardship, he was framed by Grand Tutor Pang Hong. He only wished to serve the nation, loyal and unwavering. Throughout his life, he did nothing to wrong others or himself. Though calamities piled up, he relied on his own abilities to overcome them, enabling him to find peace.

Fortune telling by lot

Remind the person concerned that this divination is to encourage you to face problems and not to retreat. As long as you approach things positively, your fortune will naturally be smooth. Be at peace with yourself in all matters, do not be overly demanding, and things will happen in due course. A benefactor will come to promote you. For wealth: wealth is ordained by heaven and varies from person to person. It is abundant in good times and scarce in bad. For illness: when "officials and ghosts" do not appear, medication is ineffective. (The earthly branches Chou, Chen, Wei, and Hsu belong to Earth and are favorable in all directions. Seek a renowned doctor nearby. If the month or ten-day period of drawing the lot encounters emptiness, it means you have found the wrong doctor and are taking the wrong medicine.)
