Xia Pi's defeat, fleeing east and west,

Anxious heart, like a frying pan, hears the morning rooster.

Born in Taoyuan, we are like brothers.

All the hardships are difficult to fathom.

  • Love: You love each other, but there are many obstacles. It will not be easy to succeed, but you can succeed by treating each other with sincerity and courtesy.
  • Family fortune: Those who have just established a family will face many hardships. Harmony brings wealth.
  • Pregnancy: Labor will be auspicious; otherwise, there is a sign of being startled and needing to rest and protect the fetus.
  • Children: Early fortune involves hard work and obstacles, but happiness can be achieved.
  • Turnaround: Though there may be some difficulties, do not be impatient; humility will lead to success.
  • Buy Jia: Although there are right and wrong, it can ultimately be achieved.
  • Disease: Although it appears serious and dangerous, it can be cured with proper care and treatment.

Hexagram interpretation:
"Lǚ" means politeness. The upper trigram of this hexagram is "Qián" (Heaven), and the lower trigram is "Duì" (Lake). This is like a strong and upright man from the Qián trigram walking ahead, followed by a gentle and weak maiden from the Duì trigram. This is not easy to achieve because the follower is not kept up. Generally speaking, it is easy and relaxed for the strong and robust to follow the gentle and weak. However, this hexagram is the opposite: the strong lead and the weak follow, so it is inevitable that the followers fall behind. "Lǚ" means to tread, which is a metaphor for the danger of stepping on a tiger's tail. Even if you encounter a fierce person in the world, as long as you treat them with gentleness and humility, they will not harm you. In this hexagram, the lower trigram "Duì" (Lake) symbolizes welcoming the strong Qián trigram (Heaven) with gentleness and virtue. Therefore, even though it is like being in danger of stepping on a tiger's tail, one can still escape unharmed and achieve peace.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Guan Yu (162-220), courtesy name Yunchang, given name Changsheng, a native of Xie county, Hedong, Sili (modern Yuncheng, Shanxi province), was born around the Yanxi era of Emperor Huan of Han. He was an important general of Liu Bei's forces during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period.

Annotation

Xiapi, the site of a defeat, scattered east and west: Xiapi - a place name from the Han and Three Kingdoms periods, corresponding to present-day Xuzhou. In the Battle of Xiapi, Guan Yu, Liu Bei, and Zhang Fei were separated. Anxious as if on fire, listening for the crow of the rooster: Yun Chang, in order to escort the two sister-in-laws to Xuchang, was anxious as if on fire every day, protecting them until dawn and the rooster's crow. Brothers forged in the peach garden: Since their oath of brotherhood in the peach garden, the three shared a deep bond as if they were true siblings. Countless hardships are difficult to fathom: "Fathom" here means to stop or linger. "Difficult to fathom" means difficult to investigate or calculate. The various difficulties and dangers were always hard to calculate (the brothers were eager to reunite in Jizhou).

After the battle of Xiapi, Guan Yu, Liu Bei, and Zhang Fei went their separate ways. To avoid implicating his two sisters-in-law, Guan Yunchang temporarily agreed to stay in Cao Cao's camp, burning with anxiety every day until the rooster crowed at dawn. Since their oath of brotherhood in the peach garden, the three men shared a bond as deep as that of real brothers, and all sorts of difficulties and dangers had always struggled to tear them apart.

Fortune telling by lot

The Oath of the Peach Garden is widely known, and people greatly admire Guan Yu's character. This fortune stick indicates that spring and summer are less favorable, as Guan Yu was in Xuzhou at that time with little to accomplish. Autumn and winter are better, as he will display his talents after the Battle of Gu City. The stick advises that using gentle and rational methods is the best way to resolve current difficulties. Peace is a blessing; if there are no great troubles, there is no need to seek further. This fortune stick tells the querent that although there will be disputes, the outcome will be good. Everything will be arranged by fate, so there is no need for worry. Regarding wealth: this depends on individual fortune; it is good to have moderate wealth, but do not be greedy. Regarding fame: with your true abilities, you will not be overlooked. Regarding marriage: a benefactor will bring about the union. Regarding feng shui: it is a good location and should not be moved.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram is named "Lǚ," meaning to tread or walk. It reveals the principle that one must be careful and cautious in all actions, following proper conduct to avoid danger and harm. This reflects the traditional code of conduct: "as if approaching a deep abyss, as if treading on thin ice."
