Hexagram interpretation:
"Sui" means to follow. It does not mean to be overbearing and to follow and agree with others. The upper trigram, "Dui," represents "a marsh or lake"; the lower trigram, "Zhen," represents "thunder." Therefore, the combined symbolic meaning of this hexagram is thunder appearing in a "marsh or lake," causing the water in the marsh to ripple and sway. This is the meaning of "Sui." At the same time, the "Dui" trigram can be compared to a young maiden, and the "Zhen" trigram can be compared to a strong man. This represents the image of a strong man obediently following a young girl. Let us further analyze the trigrams: the upper trigram has two yang lines following one yin line; the lower trigram has one yang trigram following two yin lines. All these express the meaning of "following." Therefore, this hexagram is named "Sui."

If you don't hold grudges or get angry with each other, the relationship can last.
Even the best relationships require mutual politeness.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Yuan Tiangang (birth and death years unknown), also written as Yuan Tiangang, was a famous physiognomist from Chengdu, Yizhou (present-day Chengdu, Sichuan) in the early Tang Dynasty. He served as Salt Officer in the Sui Dynasty and Volcanic Officer in the Tang Dynasty. Legend has it that he understood "wind divination," meaning he could determine good or bad fortune by listening to the sound of the wind and observing its direction. He was also skilled in physiognomy, Liu Ren, and the Five Elements.

Annotation

The opportune time, the people, and the events are already known in advance: It's clearly known when, who, and what will happen. Whether true or false, there's no need to hide; it's all within divine calculation. Don't play games with insincere feelings: Don't engage in pretense, or you'll find yourself in trouble. The sins that lead to one's death are difficult to escape.

Vernacular

Yuan Tiangang's divine calculations knew when, who, and what would happen long ago, with absolute clarity. Whether true or false, there was no need to hide; everything was within his grasp. The Dragon King, by pretending to be a scholar in white and altering the time, place, and amount of rain, created a false spectacle and played with fire, only to invite his own destruction. This fate was inescapable.

Fortune telling by lot

Yuan Tiangang sells fortunes in Chang'an, but the protagonist is the Dragon King; the Dragon Lord ignores advice, defies imperial decrees, acts on his own, and outwardly obeys while inwardly defying. The result is making things worse, suffering the consequences of his own actions, and being punished by heaven. Rain falls in the wrong place and in the wrong amount, causing floods. Therefore, if you are unsure about something, consult your elders; otherwise, you will harm yourself and others. Those who draw this lot must be cautious in all matters, or they will find no help and face a miserable end. This omen indicates: pay attention to family matters. One cannot have divided loyalties in work or life and neglect family. Mutual harmony between husband and wife, mutual assistance in family business, and the flourishing of prosperity from extreme hardship, with joy filling the air. Asking about wealth: Slight. Asking about fame/career: Wait for a future day.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram's name is "Sui," meaning to follow or to go along with. It reveals the principle of conducting oneself in the world with honesty and integrity, acting according to the times, and choosing to follow what is good. "Sui" means to follow; it signifies going with the flow, like marrying a chicken and following a chicken, or marrying a dog and following a dog. Everything requires following circumstances and external environments, being amiable with others without being attached. Zhen (Thunder) represents yang and masculinity, the eldest son, while Dui (Lake) represents yin and femininity, the young daughter. However, the masculine can yield to the feminine, humbling oneself to follow others, thus creating harmony and agreement. This leads to an auspicious and harmonious image when matters are accomplished. Zhen (Thunder) belongs to yang wood, so it also implies that withered wood can bloom again by the Dui (Lake), indicating that if one can transform in all matters, changing one's mindset and concepts, there will be new prospects. In ancient times, Sun Bin, when breaking Qin, divined this hexagram and knew this battle would be won. This is because the hexagram depicts thunder hidden at the bottom of the lake, deep and unfathomable. The enemy is outwardly visible while we are hidden; waiting for the opportune moment to strike the enemy unprepared guarantees victory.
