Hexagram interpretation:
"Kun" means to be in poverty and distress. The upper trigram (Dui) represents a marsh; the lower trigram (Kan) represents "water." Originally, water accumulates in a marsh. However, in this hexagram, the water is below the marsh, meaning the marsh has dried up and there is no water. Therefore, one must feel trapped. On one hand, the upper trigram (Dui) is one yin line covering two yang lines; the lower trigram (Kan) has one yang line sandwiched between two yin lines. Both are images of yang lines being covered. This signifies being trapped. On the other hand, the Kan trigram is yang and the Dui trigram is yin, meaning yin covers yang. Yang represents the noble person; yin represents the petty person. When the noble person is covered by the petty person, it means the righteous path is trapped by the evil path. Another interpretation is that yang represents men and yin represents women. Now, masculinity is overshadowed by femininity. Both are meanings of being trapped. Therefore, this hexagram is named "Kun Hexagram."

The Duke of Song was overjoyed and dispatched the Grand Marshal Huan Tui to welcome him outside the city. Huan Tui thought to himself, "Once Confucius gains the Duke's trust, my position as Grand Marshal will be in jeopardy!" He devised a plan to assassinate Confucius. However, Heaven cherishes all life, morality is fundamental, and compassion is paramount. With such principles, one is invincible. Huan Tui's schemes were thwarted, allowing the blessings of education and enlightenment to spread for thousands of generations.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram is named "Kun," meaning distress. It reveals that when in times of hardship and difficulty, as long as one perseveres with righteousness, remains prudent and resolute, and actively progresses, one will inevitably overcome the predicament and achieve success. Kun signifies being trapped in great difficulty. It indicates a greatly ominous sign. It is the fourth hexagram among the four difficult hexagrams. With no support from any direction, it is the most difficult time. There is little possibility of further progress in anything, so waiting patiently for the right moment is the best option at this time. In this hexagram, the receptive trigram of the lake (representing the woman) is outside, and the dangerous trigram of water (representing the man) is inside. This indicates that all domestic hardships will likely be borne by the woman. Generally, greatly ominous hexagrams have a transformation of "extreme misfortune leading to good fortune," as the saying goes, "Ten years of diligent study unnoticed, fame achieved overnight known to all." Therefore, those with aspirations or scholars who encounter this hexagram during research should not interpret it as purely inauspicious, as after enduring difficulties, prosperity is bound to follow.
