Hexagram interpretation:
"Ge" means reform or change. Thedui trigram (upper trigram) represents a marsh; the Li trigram (lower trigram) represents fire. This means fire in a marsh. In this situation, if the fire is strong, the water dries up. Conversely, if there is a lot of water, the fire is extinguished. These two are in opposition, which is the meaning of "Ge." On the other hand, the dui trigram represents metal, and the Li trigram represents fire. When fire burns metal, it melts and changes shape, which is also the meaning of change. Furthermore, the Li trigram represents "summer," and the dui trigram represents "autumn." Summer is the season when all things flourish, while autumn is when plants wither. Taken together, this signifies the greatest change in climate. Thus, it is named the "Ge hexagram."

Annotation

My fate is bleak and difficult, as if arranged by destiny. My path in life is not going as planned, and I'm living a very hard life; it all seems to be the arrangement of fate. Little did I know that a calamity of false accusations would befall me in the official arena. I was unexpectedly caught up in a lawsuit scandal. I will abide by the law and wait for my time; heaven has eyes. As long as I uphold the law and patiently await the right moment, heaven will see and naturally clear my name. Auspicious stars shine upon me, bringing influential people. This implies that a benevolent person or event will bring good fortune. Currently, you can only wait for your benefactor to arrive, who will then be able to resolve your current predicament.

Vernacular

Zhou Yuanbiao's fortunes were unfavorable, and he lived a difficult life. Was all of this fate's arrangement? All for the four words "selling offices for profit," he was sentenced to exile by Zhang Juzheng. Fortunately, heaven had eyes, and on his journey, he encountered the loyal official Hai Rui, who appealed to Emperor Shenzong. The emperor personally pardoned Zhou Yuanbiao, granted him the title of Jinshi, and kept him in the capital awaiting an official appointment.

Fortune telling by lot

Zhou Yuan studied diligently for ten years, intending to contribute to the country with his genuine talent and learning. For all matters: It is advisable to proceed step by step and have foresight to avoid failure. For inquiries about lost items: Look for the mutual hexagram of "Ge" which shows Kan (heaven) metal in the west, and it can be found there. Marriage: Both male and female may have extramarital affairs. For business inquiries regarding this slip: The "body of the hexagram" is in the position of response, meaning the decision-making power lies with others.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram is named "Ge," meaning "Revolution." It reveals the principles that when implementing change, one must seize the opportune moment and win people's trust. One must be decisive and act swiftly, yet also assess the situation and avoid acting rashly. When reform is necessary, one must first establish the direction of innovation, prepare thoroughly, and wait for the right time to gain people's trust and achieve good results. One must not be rigid and unyielding, nor adopt a casual attitude, as failure to reform will harm the future. Water over fire signifies mutual transformation, as water can extinguish fire and fire can dry up water. Furthermore, Dui represents metal and Li represents fire; fire melting metal causes it to change form, symbolizing revolution. Li also represents the middle daughter and Dui the younger daughter. The middle daughter residing below the younger one, and two women sharing a room, indicates an unfavorable situation where their interests do not align, leading to disharmony. Therefore, reform is needed.
