Amitabha Buddha's Birthday Celebration Notice

Han Chinese Buddhism commemorates Amitabha Buddha's birthday on the seventeenth day of the eleventh lunar month. This tradition originated from the Zen Master Yongming Yanshou of the Five Dynasties period, who advocated for Pure Land Buddhism. He was believed by people to be an incarnation of Amitabha Buddha, and therefore his birthday was established as Amitabha Buddha's sacred birthday. The *Amitabha Sutra* states that Amitabha Buddha attained Buddhahood ten eons ago, but his precise birthdate is not specified in the Buddhist scriptures. Han Chinese Buddhism uses this day to commemorate Amitabha Buddha, and it also serves to honor the patriarch of the Pure Land sect.

Amitabha Buddha is the most familiar of the great Buddhas. Amitabha Buddha is called the "Original Teacher, Original Buddha" by all the Buddhas. "Original Teacher" and "Original Buddha" both mean "teacher" because He possesses great abilities far surpassing those of other Buddhas.

In the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Sakyamuni Buddha declared: "The Buddha of Immeasurable Life (Amitabha Buddha), his majestic divine light, is the most honored and supreme, surpassing the light of all Buddhas."

With boundless compassion and vows, He established the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Anyone who possesses complete faith, vows, and practice, and single-mindedly recites the Buddha's name, will be guided by Amitabha Buddha and the assembly of saints to the Pure Land. Within the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, Amitabha Buddha's lotus throne is formed by His vows and is the spiritual symbol of the Pure Land.
