Laba is a special day.
Two years ago, Brother Ball suddenly announced, "This winter, we're going to make Laba congee for everyone."
To be honest, back then, we couldn't even explain what Laba congee was. Later, we learned that as early as the time of Buddha, when he was extremely weak from his practices, a shepherd girl offered him rice porridge, which helped him regain his strength. He ultimately achieved enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. Laba Festival also marks the anniversary of Buddha's enlightenment.
Thus, Jin Huan chose to hold a winter warmth event during the Laba Festival. They personally cooked Laba porridge to share with the public, offering not just sustenance but also a blessing—
Wishing everyone a smooth and peaceful journey on the path of life.
And this year, we did something even more important – we went out.
With the full assistance of Councilors Bai Pei-ru and Zhou Ya-ling, this winter warm-up event reached seven villages in Xizhi and the Wanli District. Cadres and volunteers split into groups to conduct distributions at village activity centers, with the village chiefs personally contacting the recipients. We saw elderly individuals arriving with walking sticks, and people with disabilities slowly entering in wheelchairs. Furthermore, led by the village chiefs, we personally went into the homes of residents who had difficulty going out, delivering supplies to their doors and into their hands.
And because they truly "went in," the distribution rate for these supplies reached almost 100%.
At that moment, we deeply realized: only by venturing out can we truly see the needs. Just like Prince Siddhartha back then, if he hadn't left the palace, how could he have witnessed the suffering of the world with his own eyes, embarked on the path of spiritual practice, and ultimately become the Buddha?
Even though we had to gather early on Saturday morning and start working before dawn, every Tzu Chi volunteer had a look of satisfaction and pride on their faces, not complaints. Because we knew that everyone's hard work truly helped those in need, and the love offered by believers was not misplaced.
It was a feeling of great reassurance and certainty—
We did one thing right.
Finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
With the strong support of the two council members, goodwill has permeated the local community.
Thank you to every village chief for their enthusiastic service, becoming the most important bridge;
Thanks to all the cadres and godchildren who contributed money and effort without sparing any hardship;
Thank you even more to everyone who is willing to believe in Golden Ring and respond to our winter warmth drive with us.
