In folk beliefs, Guanyin Bodhisattva is referred to by various honorific titles such as Guanyin Buddha, Guanyin Great Master, and Guanyin Mother. Among the devotees of the Golden Ring, she is universally called "Guanyin Buddha" to express the utmost reverence in their hearts.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva literally means "observing the sounds of the world." The Lotus Sutra, in its chapter on Universal Gate, states: "If innumerable, boundless, innumerable sentient beings are subjected to all kinds of suffering, and hear of this Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and with their whole heart chant the name of Avalokitesvara, then Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will immediately observe their sounds and free them all from their suffering." This is what Buddhists often say: "Constantly chant Avalokitesvara."
The Guanyin Buddha worshipped at Jin Huan was divinely inspired from Zhulinshan Guanyin Temple in Linkou District, New Taipei City, often referred to as Zhulinshan Temple. Its name originates from the "Zhu" (bamboo) of Luzhu, the "Lin" (forest) of Linkou, and the "Shan" (mountain) of Guishan, thus indicating the range of belief for the Guanyin Buddha of Zhulinshan Temple.
According to legend, the Eighteen-Armed Guanyin enshrined at Zhulin Mountain Temple is the third Guanyin Bodhisattva from Quanzhou Jinjiang County Qu'an Longshan Temple, and has a long history.
