The Eleventh Poem [Di Tian Tai, Lin Xiangru's Bridge Inscription]

Loneliness from the west circles and takes a detour.

My luck has been poor, and I am ashamed of my life.

Scholars with pens can bring peace to the world.

A determined effort will surely succeed.

  • Love: A match made in heaven, a destined marriage. Do not be willful, or it will be ruined.
  • Family fortune: Harmony in the family, auspicious signs of prosperity. All matters require prudence.
  • Pregnancy: Gives birth to a noble child. No disasters. Gives birth to a daughter without any problems.
  • Children: Harmony between parents and children brings happiness and fulfillment. Pay attention to their upbringing and do not allow them to be too willful, lest they fall into misfortune.
  • Turnover: Kochen.
  • Buy and sell: beneficial transactions, profitable gains.
  • Illness: No major issues.
  • Seeking lost item: Not stolen by a non-human, but misplaced by oneself. Possible to recover.
  • Lawsuit: Arising from a petty disagreement, it is not advisable to involve officials. Reconciliation is beneficial.
  • Business: Smooth and prosperous.
  • Academics: You have a good chance of passing your exams, but keep up the effort and don't slack off.
Hexagram interpretation:
"Tai" means peace and tranquility. Regarding this hexagram: The heaven of the Qian trigram descends with yang energy to the lower trigram. The earth of the Kun trigram ascends with yin energy to the upper trigram. This symbolizes the mutual intermingling and fusion of heaven and earth's yin and yang energies into one, leading to the prosperity and growth of all things. Furthermore, the Qian trigram represents the ruler, and the Kun trigram represents the people. This implies the ruler is below and the people are above, meaning the ruler adopts a style where the people's opinions are paramount. In other words, the sentiments of the people reach the ruler, and the ruler's virtue and benevolence spread to every citizen. The result is that the ruler and the people are close and supportive, bringing peace and tranquility to the nation. This hexagram can also be compared to: the inner trigram "Qian" representing the noble person, and the outer trigram representing the petty person. This signifies that the noble person resides within and is valued, while the petty person is cast aside and retreats. Consequently, the nation experiences peace and tranquility, hence the name "Tai" (Peace).

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Sima Xiangru (c. 179 BC – 127 BC), courtesy name Changqing, was from Chengdu, Shu Commandery (modern Sichuan Province). He was a great *fu* poet of the Western Han Dynasty. His representative work is "Fu on the Imperial Park" (*Zixu Fu*). His works are characterized by magnificent language and grand structure, making him a representative writer of Han *fu*, and he is posthumously known as the Sage of *Fu*. His elopement with Zhuo Wenjun is also widely known.

Annotation

Lonely westward, taking a detour: "All I'm good for is being a scholar," lamented Sima Xiangru, feeling lonely and coming west on a whim, only to take a detour. Bad luck and no achievements, a lifelong regret: My fortune is poor, unable to develop or achieve anything, living in adversity, I deeply regret my lifelong ambitions. Scholars take up their pens to pacify the world: When the Yelang kingdom rebelled, Emperor Wu of Han appointed Xiangru as Zhonglang General. He led soldiers into the remote wilderness to pacify the people and resolve the disputes between the Han and the ethnic minorities in the southwest. Ambition and diligence lead to success: Sima Xiangru returned triumphantly, with banners and retinues preceding and following him, as he returned to his hometown. Xiangru laughed heartily, and looking back, he saw that the inscriptions on the bridge pillars from that day were still clearly visible!

Vernacular

Sima Xiangru was learned and skilled in music, but his ambitions were difficult to realize. Long periods of frustration and disappointment left him filled with regret. Was it bad luck that he hadn't encountered a good opportunity? It was truly a waste of his talents. Not long after, the kingdom of Yelang rebelled. Emperor Wu appointed Xiangru as Zhonglangjiang (Commander of the Guards). He led soldiers far into the wilderness to pacify the people, thus proving that scholars could pacify the land with their writings. He made a vow: "A true man will not cross this bridge again unless he rides a carriage pulled by four horses," and finally achieved his goal.

Sima Xiangru had an unfortunate start in life, and despite his extensive knowledge of literature and poetry, he was unfulfilled and even looked down upon when he got married. For any endeavor, one must set their own ambitions, and be willing to work hard. It is natural for things to be difficult at first and easier later. This oracle is best in autumn, which is the time for Sima Xiangru to fully utilize his talents, so he must seize the opportunity and not miss it. However, the "Earth-Heaven Tai" hexagram's form is the opposite of its substance. Therefore, it implies that if two people with different aspirations collaborate, their fortunes will gradually deteriorate.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram's name is "Tai," which means peace and prosperity. It reveals the principle that all aspects of things move towards success through mutual communication and coordination, as well as the philosophies of yin and yang interdependency, things reaching their extreme, and prosperity leading to decline. The hexagram Tai signifies the smooth and unimpeded flow of energy. This is an auspicious hexagram representing a peak of good fortune. When all affairs are smoothly progressing and successful, one must not become complacent or act recklessly, for by doing so, one can maintain this prosperity. Otherwise, it can lead to unfavorable outcomes.
