Hexagram interpretation:
"Yu" means elephant. Elephants have massive bodies, and their appearance is leisurely and comfortable. They are also naturally gentle, do not harm others, and are sociable. The "upper trigram" of this hexagram is "Zhen." It represents "movement"; the "lower trigram" is "Kun," representing "submission." Together, they mean "movement above, submission below." This signifies harmony and joy between the upper and lower parts. The Zhen trigram can also be interpreted as "thunder," while the Kun trigram means "earth." Combined, this represents the joy and harmony of all things in nature budding and growing with vitality after the first spring thunder appears on the ground, absorbing the sun's energy. Observing the hexagram's form, five yin lines submit to the yang line on the fourth position, showing a happy and pleased acceptance. However, extreme joy can lead to sorrow, as is human nature. Therefore, one must not become conceited and forget oneself, indulging in idleness and laziness, lest they inevitably face misfortune. One must be cautious in their attitude towards life; thus, while this hexagram signifies joy and harmony, it also serves as a warning against excessive indulgence.

He is a figure of many miraculous legends and the founding patriarch of Chinese Buddhism.

Annotation

Divine powers and miraculous abilities crossing the vast ocean: Bodhidharma possessed the highest great wisdom and the most expansive divine powers and miraculous abilities, crossing the vast ocean to come to the East to spread Buddhism and enlighten all living beings. A single shoe leisurely traveling in all directions: Living in straw sandals, he was very at ease, traveling all over the country. Infinite transformations relying on peerless skills: Possessing superb techniques, he could transform into various shapes. (Metaphor for Bodhidharma's extremely high cultivation). Ten thousand people like the sea, one person hidden within: Causing thousands upon thousands of surrounding people to be unable to detect his presence.

Vernacular

Bodhidharma possessed vast supernatural powers and profound magical abilities. He sailed across the ocean to the East to propagate Buddhism and save all living beings. Wearing a pair of straw sandals, he leisurely roamed north and south across the land. His exquisite cultivation allowed him infinite transformations, making him difficult to detect even in seas of people.

Fortune telling by lot

Bodhidharma crossed the ocean to the Eastern Land to propagate Buddhism. He debated Buddhism with Emperor Wu of Liang, but their differing opinions led to his departure. He then went to Shaolin Temple, but his understanding of Buddhist principles clashed with that of Master Huiguang. He then meditated alone in Fire Dragon Cave, facing a wall for nine years. This divination is best drawn in summer or autumn. The conclusion is one of complete disappearance, with no trace or indication of direction. When inquiring about travel, the answer is "cannot." It signifies a fruitless endeavor. When inquiring about business, it is difficult to achieve success, like the sun setting in the west. The "Guashen" (auspicious point) being in the "Ying" position indicates that the decision-making power lies with others. However, those who draw this divination, though facing difficulties now, have a great opportunity for future prosperity. When inquiring about marriage, it is a match made in heaven, but one must approach it with humility. The "Ying" (response) generating "Shi" (self) indicates that the other person loves me. This is a "Liuhe" (six unions) divination. One must treat their wife with a joyful and grateful heart.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram is named "Yu," meaning joy and leisure. It reveals the principle that joy should be shared with others, not experienced alone, and that one should find joy in accordance with one's nature, rather than pursuing excessive pleasure. It serves as a warning to be mindful of the intense nature of thunder, lest excessive joy lead to sorrow and ruin. Thunder emerging from the earth signifies the rise of yang energy, causing all things to flourish, be content, and rejoice. This extends to the idea that when facing matters, one should not hesitate or delay. As long as one actively strives, results will soon be seen, and others will be sincerely convinced.
