Hexagram interpretation:
Gǔ (蠱) refers to the meaning of food decaying and breeding insects in a container. It also signifies corruption and chaos. The upper trigram, Gèn (艮), represents a mountain; the lower trigram, Xùn (巽), represents wind. Combined, it signifies wind below a mountain, blocked by the mountain and unable to circulate, thus affecting the mobility of climate regulation for cold and heat. Consequently, not only are all things unable to develop and flourish smoothly, but they also decay and breed insects. At the same time, Xùn (巽) also represents foul odor, and Gèn (艮) represents "stopping" or a covering container. Therefore, when combined, it equates to "something that already has a foul odor being covered by a container," intensifying the decay and insect breeding within the container. Eventually, the insects will have nothing left to eat, leading to a scene of cannibalism. This undoubtedly fully illustrates the meaning of Gǔ (蠱).
