Golden Ring Fortune Slip

Chapter Twenty-Two: Mountain Fire Bi, Murong Zhen Plays Chess

There must be a reason why one snoops in the dark.

Who knew there were wiser people above them.

The enlightened path before the Buddha leads to heaven.

Why foolishly obsess and invite your own death?

  • Family fortune: Externally beautiful, internally hollow, and unknown to outsiders. Solid foundations are the best strategy.
  • Pregnancy: Signs of unease during pregnancy.
  • Children: The children are weak in health but beautiful and popular.
  • Turnover: Not too much, a small amount is acceptable.
  • Buying and selling: There will be a benefactor. A quick decision is beneficial.
  • Disease: A condition that is an illusion. Generally related to emotions.
  • Looking for an item: Northeast or South, can be found.
  • Lawsuit: With a noble person to mediate, it is advisable to resolve it quickly; delaying is not beneficial.
  • Business: Don't be too demanding, and success will come.

Hexagram interpretation:
"Ben" means decoration or colorful. The upper trigram, Kan, represents the mountain; the lower trigram, Li, represents fire. So, together, it means fire under the mountain. We know that if there is fire under the mountain, the flowers, grass, and leaves are illuminated and glitter, emitting various peculiar colors, which means decoration. Furthermore, the lower trigram, Li, represents "beauty"; the upper trigram, Kan, represents "stopping." Combined, they mean "unceasing beauty," which is the meaning of decoration. Look at the trigram form: Li is two yang lines enclosing one yin line; Kan is one yang line covering two yin lines. Yin usually represents ugliness; yang represents beauty. Therefore, combined, it means "enveloping and concealing ugliness with beauty," which aligns with the meaning of "Ben." Thus, it is named the "Ben" hexagram.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Murong Zhen is a character in the story "Seven Swords and Thirteen Heroes," renowned throughout the land and known as One Branch Plum.

Annotation

Darkness often conceals the motive for prying: Prying means to spy on others' privacy. There must be a reason for spying on someone's privacy at night. How can one know that there are always wiser people above? One must have knowledge and cultivation to be a superior person. Only then will one understand that there are always people better than oneself, and heavens beyond the heavens. The path to enlightenment before Buddha leads to Paradise: Before Buddha, one must have enlightenment and think clearly about how to get to Paradise. Why be foolishly infatuated and invite self-destruction?

Vernacular

The monk Jing Kong must have had a reason for spying on others at night, which was to assassinate Xu Minggao, known as "Sai Mengchang." However, he failed, realizing there's always someone better. Before Buddha, one must awaken and contemplate how to reach heaven. Why be foolishly suspicious and confused, inviting disaster upon oneself?

Fortune telling by lot

The theme of this divination lot is Murong Zhen playing chess. The main point is that Monk Jingkong did not adhere to Buddhist precepts, was greedy for money and profit, and brought about his own death. Therefore, drawing this lot means one should maintain one's own duties and not covet unearned wealth. If asking about fortune, for women, it is safe and without harm. For men, encountering this lot means many unsatisfactory matters. For the great life: dangerous; a little good. For the elderly, after the middle of the month, transformation and clarity are auspicious. For doing things: the middle of the month is good, while the beginning and end of the month are relatively poor and bad. Following ghosts into the tomb, the illness is difficult to cure, and there are no descendants in the卦. Both the inner and outer卦 have dual government ghosts, making the illness complex. Drawing this lot at the end of the month means entering the tomb with ghosts, and it will be difficult to cure.

Divination Meaning

The name of this hexagram is "Bi," meaning ornament or decoration. It reveals the principles of how rigidity and softness separate to form patterns, and how society constructs civilization through rites and ceremonies. It also embodies the view that culture should supplement substance and that simple, profound beauty is to be admired. An outwardly beautiful but inwardly corrupt appearance or situation, where "gold and jade are on the outside but rotten cotton is on the inside," is the best description. Below the mountain is the sun, represented by Li. This signifies a beautiful, glorious sunset on the horizon. The sunlight shining on the mountain makes the grass and trees appear adorned and magnificent, hence the name "Bi."
