Hexagram interpretation:
"Jian" means to be unable to move forward, implying overcoming great hardships and difficulties. The lower trigram (Gen) represents "stopping," and the upper trigram (Kan) represents "danger." Combined, it signifies being stuck in a dangerous place with no way out. The danger is self-evident; it represents a situation where one is trapped between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, the Kan trigram represents "water," and the Gen trigram represents "mountains." One wants to move forward but encounters dangerous water; one wants to retreat but is blocked by steep cliffs and rugged rocks, rendering them powerless. This again signifies being trapped between a rock and a hard place.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Bai Zhenniang is a snake spirit who cultivated for 1,800 years in Qingfeng Cave. She transformed into human form and came to the mortal world, calling herself Bai Zhenniang. On her journey to Hangzhou, Bai Zhenniang subdued the green snake spirit, whom she named Xiao Qing. Xu Hanwen first met Bai Zhenniang by West Lake, and their connection began with the borrowing of an umbrella.

Annotation

Know the principles when fighting: In mutual combat, one must know that righteousness triumphs over evil. Acting against heaven invites condemnation, a matter of regret: "Kan" means "can" or "possible"; "Jie" means "to sigh" or "to lament." "Kan jie" means it is truly regrettable. Acting against heaven will surely invite condemnation, which is truly regrettable. The golden lock opens beneath Leifeng Pagoda: Xu Mengjiao was bestowed by the emperor to return to his hometown to pay respects at the pagoda. Just as he was burning incense and praying with sincere devotion, a sudden tremor shook the heavens and earth, and the solid Leifeng Pagoda collapsed. No longer a snake spirit, but an immortal: Bai Suzhen has cultivated herself into an immortal, and is no longer a snake spirit.

Vernacular

Master Fahai and the white snake spirit, Bai Suzhen, battled each other. It was a pity that Master Fahai acted against heaven's will, unaware that Xu Hanwen and Bai Suzhen's karmic connection was not yet severed. Twenty years later, Xu Mengjiao, by imperial decree, returned to his hometown to pay homage to the pagoda. Just as he was burning incense, praying sincerely, a sudden earth-shattering tremor occurred, and the solid Leifeng Pagoda crumbled to the ground. Bai Suzhen, gaunt and weary, emerged from the rubble, and Xu Mengjiao rushed forward to embrace his mother tightly. In that instant, the gates of heaven opened, and a golden light streaked across. Xu Mengjiao watched with his own eyes as his mother, accompanied by auspicious clouds, vanished into the distant horizon.

Fortune telling by lot

Monk Fahai, without proper investigation, bitterly separated a loving couple and subdued Bai Suzhen, trapping her under the Leifeng Pagoda. He uttered four lines: "When the West Lake dries up, and the river tides cease to rise; When the Leifeng Pagoda crumbles, the White Snake will reappear." Therefore, drawing this lot truly means being unable to move forward. Farming: Good in spring. Illness: Urgent situations are dangerous, make a wish. All matters: Auspicious when spring arrives. Fortune: If in emptiness, many people will suffer disasters. "Shi" falling into emptiness means difficulty moving forward. If in the Jiaxu decade, when the day falls into emptiness, one's actions will be restricted. Troubles will be more numerous in the first half of the year, with hope for a turning point after autumn.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram is named "Jian," meaning "traveling through difficulties." It reveals the principle that when facing hardships, one should act with gentleness, wait for the right time, and advance or retreat appropriately. It also emphasizes the important role of unity and mutual cooperation between those above and below. Jian: Represents cold feet. It signifies an inauspicious omen, the third of the four difficult hexagrams. Walking barefoot in ice and snow signifies how arduous and difficult the current situation is, yet one cannot abandon it and must persevere through to the end. Although this is a helpless situation, there will always be a time when hardship gives way to joy. When all endeavors are difficult, both career and relationships face predicaments where it's hard to advance or retreat. Gen points to the northeast, and Kan points to the north. This suggests that the danger might originate from the northeast. Therefore, those who receive this hexagram are advised to seek help from the southwest. Kan water represents entrapment, and Gen mountain represents stopping. This denotes the twelfth lunar month of winter, signifying being trapped in imminent danger yet unable to move forward, thus being stuck in a perilous state.
